The light shines brightest when it is shared. Mickey Leland was the ultimate teacher, educating people to uplift themselves, more importantly, each other. He practiced his faith and taught by example.
It’s said Mickey never met a stranger. He cared about everyone. You’ve probably been touched by Mickey, without even knowing it. In countless ways, Mickey made the world better. Mickey waged peace. Rather than fight against others in petty personal attacks, he fought FOR fairness and important issues. He fought AGAINST global disease and FOR low-cost medicine. He fought AGAINST poverty and hunger and FOR global abundance.
He built diplomatic bridges. His policies were decades ahead. In today’s polarized world, his message and people skills are needed more than ever. But it’s Mickey’s enthusiasm, his love of life, and everyone he met that I remember most. Mickey had great vitality. Even if you had never met him, he welcomed you as a friend and shared his light. It wasn’t for personal glory that Mickey traveled to places halfway around the world. It was for the thrill of giving back. He was a man trying to give back.
